Some of the ‘split box’ examples looked liked they’d been through the wars, but were as strong and amongst the most aggressive-sounding as they came - volcanic departures. 40126 was certainly no exception, battle-scarred and at one point looking like it had been working down a mine, this was of course a machine familiar to incident - for it was the very machine that on the 8th August 1963 was at the head of an overnight Glasgow - Euston mail train, stopped, hijacked and relieved of over £2 million in an incident later referred to as The Great Train Robbery.
